Why a Nissan Patrol?

stock standard December 2019

There's a saying on most of the Nissan Y62 Patrol Owners Facebook pages "test drive one and tell us what colour you buy". For us that saying is true so much so we're now on our 2nd 62.

I remember around 2015, driving past a Series 1 62 everyday in the suburb we used to live in and thinking 'wow that thing is huge'. I also remember choking on my coffee when I googled how much one was. For those that don't know the Series 1 came to Australia in February 2013 and was available in three model variants ST-L, Ti and Ti-L. The ST-L being the entry level spec would set you back around $90k give or take driveway! At those insane prices I was content to just look and yearn.

Fast forward 3.5 years later and we finally began our love affair with the 62. It was mid 2018 and I was pregnant with our second little one, Lachie. At that time I was driving around in the cutest little 2004 3 door 5 speed manual Mini Cooper. Driving it made me feel like Charlize Theron in The Italian Job and man did I drive it like I stole it. It was a joy to drive but ridiculously impractical with Cheyne being 6 foot 3, myself being 5 foot 9, Liam in a car seat and a baby on the way, we needed and wanted something bigger to accomodate our growing family.

Purchasing our first 62 all happened pretty quickly. We were driving past a Nissan dealership in Coffs Harbour NSW, just an hour up the road from where we were living at the time and saw a black beast of a Series 4 62 just sitting there in the yard begging for us to test drive her. Well long story short, we did, fell in love and we signed on the line that day. Only problem was the colour, we really wanted white or silver so had to wait for a deal to be done. We waited impatiently for about 4 weeks for a swap between dealerships (weird coincidence but our white one seen below actually came from the Sunshine Coast) and 9 days before Lachie's due date we took delivery, talk about cutting it close! We had our first 62 for a little over 12 months before we sold in anticipation for the Series 5.

Tech Specs

These are the impressive bits that for us, made the 62 the best choice for our family car.

  • 8 seats with 2nd and 3rd row aircon

  • The space....OMG the space, we have huge car seats for the boys, Cheyne refers to them as space capsules, we fit them and an adult across the 2nd row with no complaints.

  • The power, a 5.6L V8 petrol engine powers this beast of a car with ease

  • Tow capacity- 3500kg braked towing, this thing will haul most anything you chuck behind it

  • The luxurious feel of it for the price point. Alright, alright I'll admit the woodgrain isn't to my taste but we fixed that in the silver 62 and the pleated door trim is also odd but I can live with it.

Since the purchase of our silver 62, we've really gotten into modifying her with big plans for in the works. I'll be documenting our progress so far in future posts and also the process of what's to come.

Thanks for reading and hope to see you all out there, where the adventure awaits
